WolframAlpha – A New Way to Search

Dave | May 20, 2009

wolframalphaJust what this world needs is another search engine is what you’re probably thinking, right?  I’m here to tell you… RIGHT.  WolframAlpha isn’t your typical search engine.  In fact calling it a search engine is a complete injustice and a misnomer.

WolframAlpha according to their website is a computational knowledge enginge.  So what does this mean to you?  If you have any question regarding numbers in any way, shape or form, you have to check out WolframAlpha.  And it’s not just pure math.  It’s historical numerical data, it’s geographical data.  It’s word patterns.  It’s just about anything you could want to know and more.

The nice thing about WolframAlpha is, it isn’t in competition with Google or any other search engine.  And it’s creator even says so.  That isn’t the point.  The point is to provide a searchable engine to help where the other search engines leave off.  So if you need homework help for your kids in Algebra, Trigonometry, Physics, Geography, History, etc.  where numbers or dates are important, WolframAlpha may be the place to go.

And since WolframAlpha is such a new concept in searchable engines, they’ve provided a video on how to use WolframAlpha.  Check it out.

Political Compass Redux

Dave | March 10, 2009

polcompassWell with all the political changes in the U.S. recently and my reactions to them, I thought it might do to revisit Political Compass.  I’ve taken the quiz now four times.  The first two times I took it  had me at an economic of -1.25 and a social of  -.97.  This was quite a shocker who grew up in a ultra-conservative household, and I simply answered off the cuff.  So the third time I took it was back in 2007, and I really read the questions and thought about them before I answered.  My economic score went to a .25 and my social went to a -1.64.  Not much of a change in all honesty.    My impression of that experience can be had here.

So I just retook the quiz to check where I stand politically now.  And apparently I’m still economically conservative and socially libertarian.  Small government and personal liberty for all.  I thought maybe my political views may have been skewed because of my strong opposition to President Obama.  Good to see that I haven’t changed, just become more vocal.

I would recommend you take the test.  It’s fun and maybe you’ll learn something if you answer the questions honestly.  If you follow the link they’ll ask you to go to the homepage.  Long story short, they don’t store scores, and they don’t collect private info.  Enough said.  If you do take the test, let me know what you think.

Got Woot! ?

Dave | March 14, 2005

Woot! is one of the simplest websites in the world. What you don’t Woot! ? Woot! posts one item for sale per day. Once it’s sold out, that’s it.

It’s no joke, the prices are real and they are legitimate. Some of the things I wouldn’t bother with, but other deals you just want to hop on. New items post every weekday morning at 1201. Yep, one minute past midnight, and if it’s a deal, it will sell out.

Check it out, you may just find that one thing you can’t live without…..for cheap.
