WolframAlpha – A New Way to Search

Dave | May 20, 2009

wolframalphaJust what this world needs is another search engine is what you’re probably thinking, right?  I’m here to tell you… RIGHT.  WolframAlpha isn’t your typical search engine.  In fact calling it a search engine is a complete injustice and a misnomer.

WolframAlpha according to their website is a computational knowledge enginge.  So what does this mean to you?  If you have any question regarding numbers in any way, shape or form, you have to check out WolframAlpha.  And it’s not just pure math.  It’s historical numerical data, it’s geographical data.  It’s word patterns.  It’s just about anything you could want to know and more.

The nice thing about WolframAlpha is, it isn’t in competition with Google or any other search engine.  And it’s creator even says so.  That isn’t the point.  The point is to provide a searchable engine to help where the other search engines leave off.  So if you need homework help for your kids in Algebra, Trigonometry, Physics, Geography, History, etc.  where numbers or dates are important, WolframAlpha may be the place to go.

And since WolframAlpha is such a new concept in searchable engines, they’ve provided a video on how to use WolframAlpha.  Check it out.

Waging a War on “Ugly”

Dave | March 30, 2009

The town of Cedartown Georgia is waging a war on ugly.  Read the article. You will find that one of the Cedartown City Commissioners, Scott Tillery, was upset when an economic development expert called Polk County, and its cities, an “Ugly Baby.”

Now, what I can tell you, is that not all of Polk County is ugly. The people are decent, well intentioned folks.  There are some very nice, beautiful and even scenic places around here.  Polk County is still rural countryside for the most part.  But when you get close up to some places, as Scott mentions in the article, you do notice the decay, the faded and chipped paint, the litter, the rust and mildew, broken fences and sidewalks, dilapidated houses, and unkempt businesses.  He is right enough about pointing it out.  And yes, on the surface, he is right about all this possibly keeping businesses away from Polk County. The Importance of A Good Education

Please watch the above video and then read.

I am constantly trying to convince parents around me to take control for their child’s education.  The public school system that we dealt with in the past is a failure.  Which is why we decided to homeschool our son and also use a learning center to further his education.

I was reminded why we yanked our son out of the public school system after viewing that video.

  1. The system here is myopic and focused on statewide results.  Don’t bother mentioning nationwide or worldwide.
  2. The system here is more concerned with AYP numbers than with an actual quality education for it’s students.  If they were actually concerned with quality education the AYP numbers would improve.
  3. The system here has no logical concept of global economics, or the global job market and the competition for jobs that their students will have to face.
  4. Too many parents in this system think the schools are babysitters and don’t take an active interest in the system or the education provided.

Thank God we are out of public schools.
