The National 2006 Elections

Well, I can’t say I’m surprised by how the Elections turned out.  It was the Republicans election to lose, and they did so.

The Republicans deviated from the core set of values that allowed them to sweep into the White House, Senate, and Congress.  They absolutely betrayed the very voters who voted for them, and Tuesday they saw the result.  And hopefully, they learned a lesson, but as they are politicians I doubt it.

The good news is that the people that were voted into office were mostly centrists on both sides of the political aisle.  This should help to keep Pelosi in check.  And as there are centrists now, we may very well see legislation regarding illegal immigration that will pass into law.  And while I am in support of the Iraq War (not necessarily why GW stated for going over mind you), I would like to see a more thorough and decisive plan for the furthering of the democratic government there.  What I don’t want to see is an early withdraw of troops only to see the country relapse into yet another dictatorship.

What I am personally waiting to see is if the liberal Democrats mistakenly take these victories as endorsement for their beliefs.  If they do, and they try to dominate the centrists in their party and influence those on the Republican side, I believe that they will be out of office with the next election.

Why do I believe this?  Because of the voters.  While the voters voted in more Democrats, they voted centrists Democrats, modified Reagan Democrats.  Democrats who, for their party, were conservative rather than liberal.  The voters were also conservative when they answered the exit polls for the most part.  The voters want change, but they don’t want political upheaval.  Let’s watch and see what happens.

The one thing that left me scratching my head was the approval of the increase in minimum wage.  What are people thinking?  Minimum wage is what you get when you enter the job market.  Minimum wage is for high schoolers and college kids working their way through college.  It is usually not an issue for those after college or working a decent blue collar job.  All that voting an increase in minimum wage will do is to increase the costs of goods overall, and it will hurt the small business owner and create the loss of jobs.  Other than that America, not bad voting overall.
