File Sharing
Dave | August 18, 2005Oh yes, those evil words. The bane of the RIAA. Filesharing, since its inception, has been defined by those who abuse it. Most everyone is familiar with Kazaa and the other filesharing programs where you log in thru their service and downloading programs.
However, there is a new trend, called bit torrents, that is quite a useful P2P protocol. It allows filesharing but you don’t have to log on to a service. Download speeds are regulated by who you are downloading from, but my experience has been that the average download on a broadband connection hovers around 40 kbs or higher. The good aspect of this is that you don’t have to worry about spyware with most client software. The bad aspect is that you have to search for torrents outside the client software.
The current client I am using is Azureus. A Java based application, this client is full featured, allowing multiple downloads and many customization options. It allows you to control how much bandwidth you will use (up to unlimited of course), default save locations, auto transfer of completed downloads to another directory, etc. There are also plugins available.
So if you want to see what bit torrents are all about check out Azureus. I don’t think you will be dissappointed.
